What a novated lease changes
A novated lease involves an employee, an employer and a finance provider. Under the arrangement, the employer makes agreed lease payments while the novation is in place, usually through a salary package. The finance contract, employment arrangements and tax treatment determine the employee's actual cost.
It is not automatically cheaper than buying a car or taking another form of finance. The useful comparison is the after-tax cost of the same car over the same period, including the amount needed at the end.
Compare a complete quote
- The car's cash price and any accessories, delivery or establishment charges.
- The finance amount, term, payment schedule and disclosed interest or finance charges.
- Administration fees and the running costs included in the package.
- Pre-tax and post-tax deductions, with the assumptions used to calculate them.
- The residual payment and any other end-of-term costs.
- What happens if actual running costs differ from the budget.
Use the same kilometres, insurance cover, servicing assumptions and ownership period when comparing a lease with other options. A lower deduction per pay cycle can conceal a different residual or a longer term.
Separate the vehicle decision from the package
Start with a car that suits the actual use and a cash price you would accept without a salary package. A tax illustration can make an expensive vehicle look affordable by focusing on a pay-cycle deduction. It does not tell you whether a cheaper car, a used car or keeping the existing vehicle would meet the same need at a lower total cost.
Ask for the negotiated vehicle price separately from finance and running expenses. Compare that price with an independent written quote for the same specification. If accessories, insurance or service plans are optional, price the arrangement with and without them. The convenience of one deduction should not prevent you from seeing what each component costs.
A smaller deduction can leave a larger final bill
Consider two hypothetical four-year packages for the same car. Assume the figures have already been translated into comparable after-tax cash costs, with the same running-cost coverage and no other charges. Package A costs $300 a fortnight over 104 fortnights, followed by an $18,000 residual: $49,200 in total. Package B costs $280 a fortnight with a $25,000 residual: $54,120.
The lower fortnightly figure is $4,920 more expensive on these assumptions. This is not a tax or finance quote; it shows why both the regular deductions and the final obligation belong in the comparison. If running-cost coverage differs, reconcile that difference before choosing either package.
When comparing buying with leasing, use a consistent position at the end. If one calculation leaves you owning the car and another assumes that it is sold, adjust both for the same ownership or sale outcome. Deduct a resale estimate only once, and test a lower value. A forecast sale price is not cash you can rely on until the vehicle is sold.
Distinguish a running-cost budget from a fixed cost
A package may set aside money for fuel or electricity, tyres, servicing, insurance and registration. Ask which amounts are estimates and which are contractually fixed. Find out how a surplus or shortfall is reconciled, who can change the budget and what fees apply to doing so. An overestimated running-cost budget can make deductions look higher without being an equivalent increase in final cost.
Use realistic annual kilometres and check the insurance cover rather than comparing only the premium. If the package assumes a maintenance schedule, ask what happens when repairs fall outside it. A warranty or servicing budget should not be presented as protection from every unexpected vehicle cost.
Keep a record of actual spending against the budget during the arrangement. This gives you time to correct an unrealistic allowance before a large reconciliation. Also clarify how a claim is submitted and whether the employee must pay the supplier first.
Tax benefits need their own set of assumptions
A useful tax estimate identifies the employee's circumstances, the treatment of the vehicle and associated expenses, and the pre-tax and post-tax components. It should show the change in take-home pay rather than simply applying a headline tax percentage to every expense. Ask what has been excluded from the calculation and who checked the assumptions.
The ATO's electric-vehicle FBT fact sheet distinguishes exemption from reporting: an exempt car benefit can still require a reportable fringe benefits calculation. Ask your adviser whether reporting affects any income-tested obligation or entitlement relevant to you. A claim that a vehicle is FBT-exempt does not answer every personal tax question.
Make the employment-change case concrete
Request an illustration for leaving the employer halfway through the proposed term. It should identify the outstanding finance position, any termination amount, ongoing running costs and the process for transferring or ending the arrangement. Do not assume a future employer will accept the same provider or package. Keep the documents needed to understand the obligation independently of payroll.
For the employer, identify who starts deductions, reconciles invoices and handles leave or departure. Give employees a clear contact for a disputed deduction. The employer's administrative convenience and the employee's financial outcome should both be examined before describing the arrangement as a staff benefit.
The residual is a payment obligation
A residual is not a promise that the car will sell for that amount. Ask what you must pay or arrange at the end, whether you can refinance, and who carries the shortfall if the car's sale proceeds are insufficient.
The ATO's guidance on novated car leases explains their treatment within the car fringe-benefit rules. The finance agreement still determines your contractual obligations.
Electric vehicles: check the conditions, not just the fuel type
Do not assume that every electric or hybrid vehicle, or every associated cost, receives the same tax treatment. Have the employer or salary-packaging provider identify the applicable rules for the specific car and arrangement and show their effect in the quote.
The plug-in hybrid position changed from 1 April 2025. The ATO states that continued exempt treatment for an existing arrangement depends on conditions including prior exempt use and a financially binding commitment. A new plug-in hybrid arrangement should not be treated as exempt merely because older advertising says it is. See the ATO explanation of the change.
For employers considering the benefit
Tax sources checked 5 October 2026. Ask a qualified adviser to check the calculations against the employee's circumstances before committing.
For employers: payroll, records and employment changes
Before offering the benefit, agree who maintains the salary-package records, checks vehicle eligibility and handles FBT calculations and reporting. An exemption from FBT can still leave reporting obligations. Ask the adviser how reportable fringe benefits affect the employee and what evidence the employer must retain.
Model payroll interruptions, unpaid leave and an employee leaving before the lease ends. Establish who tells the financier, who pays during the transition and which obligations return to the employee. Avoid presenting a salary package as a guaranteed saving for every employee: their tax position, use, package fees and alternative purchase method affect the result.
The ATO electric-cars guidance sets the exemption conditions. The general exemption for plug-in hybrids ended on 1 April 2025, with limited continuation rules for qualifying existing arrangements. Check the applicable vehicle and timing rules instead of reusing an old luxury-car-tax threshold.
What the historical employer and EV surveys measured
In SMBLoan’s February 2024 report, based on 202 directors and decision-makers, 70% said they would encourage employees to use novated leases instead of company-provided cars. A separate 69% believed employees would take them up. These were employer expectations, not observed take-up or proven cost savings. Although described as an SME survey, the archived analysis included a large-business group and did not disclose subgroup counts. Its state rankings are not repeated here.
The October 2022 EV survey of 210 owners and decision-makers asked about a proposed electric-car tax measure: 66% said it would encourage a purchase at some point. Among that interested subgroup, 63% said they would finance the vehicle. The law subsequently passed; those answers remain historical intentions and cannot measure purchases, current demand or eligibility under today’s rules. The two surveys asked different questions of different samples, so their percentages are not a before-and-after adoption trend.

A novated lease transfers payment obligations through payroll while employment continues. Compare the full vehicle and running cost, FBT eligibility, administration, residual and what happens on resignation, redundancy or employer change.

What the figures mean
A novated lease can be attractive for an eligible vehicle and stable employment, but the decision should survive a job change and a realistic residual value test.
