| Input | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Asset price | Enter the price on the same GST basis as the finance quote. |
| Deposit | Enter the cash contribution deducted from that price. |
| Annual interest rate | Use a nominal annual rate, not a factor rate or monthly percentage. |
| Term in years | Whole or fractional years are accepted when they equal whole monthly payments; 1.5 years is 18 months. |
| Final balloon | Enter the lump sum due at the end, or zero for full repayment through instalments. |
What the estimate assumes
The calculator uses a constant annual rate divided into monthly periods, equal payments at the end of each month and a final balloon paid with the last scheduled payment. It includes interest on the outstanding balloon during the term.
It does not model irregular first payments, daily interest, payment holidays, fees other than those entered, insurance, GST credits or income tax deductions. A lender's actual schedule may differ for those reasons and because of rounding.
Use the final payment carefully
A balloon lowers regular repayments compared with the same loan fully repaid over the term. It also leaves principal outstanding for longer. Do not treat the balloon as a forecast or guarantee of the asset's resale value.
For an illustrative $40,000 financed amount over four years at 8% p.a., the monthly estimate is about $976.52 with no balloon. With a $10,000 final balloon, it is about $799.05, with the $10,000 still due at the end. These are mathematical examples, not available product offers.
Read a complete example from input to total
Enter an illustrative $50,000 asset price, $10,000 deposit, 8% annual rate, four-year term and $10,000 balloon. The financed amount is $40,000. With both fee inputs left at zero, the estimate is about $799.05 a month and $48,354.61 in finance payments including the final balloon.
The cash-outlay result adds the $10,000 deposit, giving $58,354.61 before fees. Entering a $500 upfront establishment fee and $10 monthly account fee changes the monthly cash payment to $809.05, the finance total to $49,334.61 and cash outlay to $59,334.61. These fees are illustrative. The displayed repayment total is calculated from the unrounded payment, so multiplying the displayed monthly figure by 48 may differ by a few cents. The financier's schedule determines actual debits and any final adjustment.
At 0% interest, a $40,000 financed amount with a $10,000 balloon over 48 months requires $625 monthly plus the balloon. That is an arithmetic test, not an available offer. A zero advertised interest rate also does not establish that an agreement has no fees.
Change one input at a time
To see what a larger deposit does, keep the rate, term and balloon unchanged. Then test the term or balloon separately. Changing several inputs together can produce a lower repayment without making clear which change caused it or what the new final obligation is.
Enter 1.5 years for 18 monthly payments, not 1.8. The term needs to represent a whole number of monthly payments. Keep the deposit below the purchase price and the balloon no greater than the financed amount. If the quote uses payments in advance, a different frequency or an unusual final payment, request the lender's schedule rather than forcing it into these assumptions.
Turn the repayment result into a purchase budget
The cash-outlay result already includes the deposit, the upfront establishment fee and monthly account fees you entered. Add insurance and other charges outside those fields separately; do not add the entered fees twice. Keep delivery, installation and running costs in the wider equipment budget too.
To compare two finance quotes, keep the price, deposit, term and balloon consistent. If one lender's repayment is lower because it leaves a larger final payment, the result does not establish a saving. Save the assumptions with each result so you can see what changed.
For hire purchase, ownership transfers under the agreement after the required payments and conditions. If you plan to sell or replace the asset before the end, request an early payout figure or method from the financier. The full-term calculator total does not tell you that exit cost.
Before accepting a quote
Ask the financier for the final repayment schedule and confirm the amount financed, payment timing and balloon. Give the documents to your accountant if you need to establish GST or income tax treatment. The calculator compares cash payments; it does not establish a tax advantage.
How the fee inputs work
The establishment fee is treated as an upfront cash payment. It does not increase the loan principal or attract interest in this model. The monthly fee is added to every scheduled monthly payment. If a lender finances fees, use its stated amount financed and repayment schedule: an upfront-fee model will not reproduce that contract.
